The 28th of January is Data Privacy Day, an annual celebration of all things privacy and data protection. It’s the time of the year when privacy professionals can reflect and discuss the state of the privacy landscape, look at the future but also increase awareness within their organizations.
2024 has been a year with a wave of legislative and guidance updates in the UK. The failure of the Data Protection and Digital Information (No. 2) Bill left an air of uncertainty regarding the future of a new comprehensive privacy regulatory framework. However, the newly introduced Data (Use and Access) Bill promises to impact data protection with its provisions on lawful processing, automated decision-making, data transfers, cookies, and expanded regulatory powers of the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). From the side of artificial intelligence (AI), with no private sector bill currently in sight, ICO and AI Safety Institute released several guides that businesses will need to continue to navigate in 2025.
